Order books, invoices typed in Word, stock counted by hand, customers calling to ask for opening hours: many Tunisian businesses still work this way, and they work. Digitalising doesn't mean changing everything at once. It means removing double entry and errors, one step after another.

Step 1: map what exists

Write down how an order moves, from the customer's request to payment: who enters what, in which tool, how many times. Double entry and shared Excel files are your first targets.

Step 2: start with invoicing, stock and accounting

This is where errors cost the most: non-compliant invoices, wrong stock, forgotten withholding tax. Choose a tool that fits your size: business software on one computer for a small structure, a cloud ERP when several people or sites work together.

Step 3: migrate data cleanly

Customers, suppliers, items, opening balances: use the migration to remove duplicates and fix records. Software fed with wrong data produces wrong reports.

Step 4: train and support

The human factor decides success. Name an internal lead, train each team on its own tasks, and keep the old system running in parallel for a few weeks if needed. Employees with twenty years in the company know the exceptions: involve them from the start.

Step 5: open online channels

Once your back office is reliable, you can expose your information to customers: website, online catalogue, automatic answers on WhatsApp and Instagram for frequent questions, appointment booking.

Step 6: measure and keep going

Pick a few indicators (time to invoice, stock count gaps, overdue receivables) and track them before and after. They show what digitalisation actually delivered, and where to act next.

Frequent mistakes

  • buying software before describing your needs;
  • trying to digitalise everything at once;
  • forgetting the budget for training and data migration;
  • keeping parallel Excel files “just in case”, which end up diverging;
  • neglecting compliance: e-invoicing, withholding tax, VAT.

To compare solutions, use our checklist How to choose an ERP in Tunisia.
